Before starting to talk about the industrial design of OnePlus 6, I would like to share with you some of OnePlus's design concepts. In my last long article, I mentioned that good user experience should be no burden. Products are things that are related to people. Excellent industrial design should also give people the feeling of no burden and ease. There is no superfluous design that is visually superfluous, and the purpose is to solve the problem in terms of function, rather than excessively "showing skill" to increase the burden on the user. But to truly achieve such feelings, behind it is serious and rational, sometimes even painful. A company is needed to keep honesty with the design and the product itself day after day, and not forget about the details—even if it's inconsequential. Be honest with the design To be honest with industrial design is to respect the look that a product should have, rather than excessive "showing skills." The honest design will perfectly serve the product function and reflect the product itself. The moment you hold it, "it speaks for itself," and end users will pay for more "honest" designs. In August 2015, after a speech in Hong Kong, I met a user who knew OnePlus well. He likes sandstone black and thinks this is OnePlus' "most differentiated" design, hoping we can continue to maintain it in future products. At that time, I just took OnePlus 3, still in the design phase, and gave him a look. He immediately opened his eyes and said that he was too beautiful. I told him that OnePlus3 does not use sandstone black and is metal. Would you still choose? He said that of course, because he can read the consistency of the entire metal will make the whole body more thin and exquisite. But what I did not tell him was that we tried sandstone black on OnePlus 3. The effect was not ideal. There was no smooth, complete and comfortable metal. As a technology company, what we have been doing is exploring various materials and better possibilities. Yes, sandstone black is differentiated, but we must keep honest judgment on the actual effect of the product itself in order to have better possibilities. Pay attention to those irrelevant details However, there are still many people who still have misunderstandings about industrial design. They think that industrial design should be something different. In fact, a truly good design does not deliberately pursue the exaggeration of the external form. It may even forget the external form at the beginning, think more inwards, and polish on materials, craftsmanship, and seemingly insignificant details. From OnePlus 1 to OnePlus 6, we've always insisted that we don't miss any details, even if it seems to be insignificant 0.01mm. Because a lot of seemingly insignificant details will eventually make the whole design compelling. From a complete model to a better design, this is actually the process of "constantly negating and improving" the details. Each of our final decisions is based on countless negative proposals. As CEO and product manager, my biggest responsibility for the product is a Say No process. Only by ensuring that there is sufficient reason for each scenario, Say No, the remaining decisions will be convincing enough. One of my habits is that no matter if I am on a business trip or in the office, my backpack will carry several mobile phone models at any time. When I was alone, I liked to take them out, feel the details and feel, or sometimes simply place them on the table and look at them at a 45° angle. Negation and improvement often occur at an inadvertent moment. If a model, after several months or even six months, I still feel pretty, then it is very likely that this feeling is right. OnePlus 6 design OnePlus 6 also experienced a process of constant denial and improvement before adjusting to the current feeling. In appearance, we have always kept the horizon and arc design. From OnePlus One to OnePlus 6, lines and curvature have always been our most important design language. Lines are like the skeleton of a person. Only by ensuring that the skeleton is slim enough to look good, we will create on this basis. In addition to maintaining the horizon design, we also tried glass materials on OnePlus 6. Although OnePlus is not the first to use, we are confident to provide users with another understanding of the glass process: OnePlus 6's glass process design is centered on "value" and "feel". As I mentioned at the beginning, products are things that are related to people. We think about how users see and use this phone in different scenarios. The advantage of glass over metal is that it creates a transparent, bright, pure feeling visually. It is especially important to consider the visual experience of blending with glass and different light conditions. The OnePlus design team therefore tried more than 70 scenarios to select the best one. At the same time, feel is what we always pursue. We care about the user's heartbeat at the moment of the mobile phone, and also care about the user's feeling of no burden on the hands after prolonged use. Our users are therefore also groups that have a very high sense of opponents. The OnePlus 6's backshell is printed on five layers using nanotechnology, which is the first time in the mobile phone industry. Although the increase in the number of paintings is difficult to visually perceive, it is very sensitive to distinguish between the details of the 3rd and 5th layers when it is really in your hand. In the past four years, OnePlus's core users are actually a group of people who are very picky and sensitive to product experience and industrial design. This has also become a driving force for us. When you can perceive the improvements we have made in those details and thereby encourage us, all previous seriousness and pain truly become a kind of joy without burden.
