Wu Ling, Secretary-General of National Semiconductor Lighting Engineering R&D and Industry Alliance, gave a conference report on the development of China's semiconductor lighting industry at the 2009 CHINASSL conference. Optoelectronics News Network sent a full participation in this event. Wu Ling pointed out that China's LED industry has entered rapid In the development stage, “from the data from January to September, the performance of the entire industry this year will exceed the expectations at the beginning of the year.”

At present, the current status of China's semiconductor lighting industry is: the epitaxial chip industry is developing rapidly, and the number of packaging companies is large, but the scale is generally small, and the application development is relatively fast, such as solar LED street lights.

Epitaxial chips are developing rapidly but still far from abroad

In terms of extension and chip, Chinese companies have grown rapidly and started to hit the high-end market. In 2008, China's epitaxial and chip market output value was 1.9 billion yuan, an annual growth rate of 26%, but from the fourth quarter of 2008 to the first quarter of 2009. Affected by the global financial crisis, sales fell by 30%, and the average price of products fell by 40%. In terms of MOCVD, 135 new devices were added in 2008, and the number of new additions is expected to exceed 100 in 2009. The monthly capacity of GaN in 2008 is 1400kk/month, and it is expected to increase by 60% in 2009. "At present, the efficacy of domestic LED chips has reached 90-100lm/w (large-scale production), and the level of R&D (laboratory) has reached 100-110lm/w. Especially worthy of attention is based on independent intellectual property rights. The LED efficacy of the silicon substrate has reached 70lm/w."

From the digital point of view, although the performance of domestic LED chips has improved a lot, it still has a great gap with the advanced level in foreign countries. At present, 50% of medium and high-end applications use domestic chips, but 80% of high-power LEDs rely on imports.

China LED chip capacity statistics

A large number of packaging manufacturers but lacking leading enterprises

In the field of packaging, there are currently more than 1,000 packaging manufacturers in China, but the scale is generally small. "80% of enterprises have an output value of less than 10 million, and only 50 companies have an output value of more than 100." In other words, China is currently No matter in epitaxial chips or package applications, there is a lack of leading enterprises.

Wu Ling pointed out that in 2008, the domestic LED package production value was 18.5 billion yuan, an increase of 10% over 2007, of which HB LED accounted for 76%.

Domestic LED package output growth curve

The application market is developing rapidly

In contrast, the development of LEDs in applications is very eye-catching, especially in architectural lighting and display. “In 2008, China’s LED application market was 45 billion yuan, up 50% from 2007, and display and architectural lighting accounted for 66.6% of the overall application market.”

"Because of the Beijing Olympics, China's LED application market in 2008 has not been affected by the financial crisis." Wu Ling said.

In terms of functional lighting, the industry is constantly looking for new breakthroughs. Take LED street lights as an example. At present, 200,000 LED street lights have been deployed.

Although China's LED application products have the largest production capacity in the world, they can provide ODM services to world-renowned companies. However, the name of the world has not yet started, and it still belongs to “unknown.” Wu Ling suggested that Chinese companies must build their own brands and Add a force to build a global sales system.

China's LED industry faces many challenges

Although China's LED industry is developing very rapidly, it must be pointed out that China's LED industry still faces many challenges. The lack of talents, especially the lack of high-end talents, is an important issue that restricts the development of China's LED industry. According to statistics, there are currently more than 800,000 LED employees in mainland China, but the demand for new talents is expected to reach 600,000 in 2010-2012. The gap is still very large.

“The high-end technical talents (or leading types) are very scarce, and the well-trained skilled technicians and engineers are also lacking, and the mobility of personnel is also extremely high.” Wu Ling pointed out that these factors have limited the domestic LED industry. The pace of development.

In addition to the shortcomings of talent, other challenges facing China's LED industry include the lack of intellectual property and patents, the involvement of venture capital and other capital, technical challenges and market challenges (the relationship between LED lights and energy-saving lamps). “As of December 31, 2008, the number of LED patents that China has applied for is 26,069, of which 50% is concentrated in the package and application. The patents for epitaxy and chip are only a small percentage, although they are also growing. In packaging and application. In the field, 57% of LED application patents are currently concentrated in China."

Of course, in recent years, due to the broad prospects of LED, many venture capitalists have begun to pay attention to the LED industry. In the first half of 2009, the total investment of LEDs exceeded 20 billion yuan. 80% of the funds come from private capital and joint ventures.

In addition, where is the breakthrough in LED functional applications? As a revolutionary technology and emerging industry, LED is not only a technical issue, but also how to cultivate the industrial development model. The sustainable development business model requires the joint efforts of the industry.

Opportunity is greater than challenge

Despite many challenges, Wu Ling believes that the future opportunities of China's LED industry are greater than challenges. Among them, the government will play an important role in it. The national policy will provide a great development opportunity for the LED industry, just on October 12. The National Development and Reform Commission and other six departments jointly announced the "Opinions on the Development of Semiconductor Lighting Energy-Saving Industry" (hereinafter referred to as "Opinions"), which opened the curtain for the localization of the industry. "The introduction of opinions is aimed at cultivating LEDs into emerging strategic industries." Wu Ling pointed out.

Overall, we believe that LED light efficiency will be superior to traditional light sources by 2010. “This is a strategic and potential city with great potential.” Specific to China, China will undoubtedly become a huge market with a lot of business opportunities. We should develop the LED industry with a global vision, and semiconductor lighting will definitely contribute to the country's sustainable development."
