In June 2004, Osram filed a lawsuit accusing Dominant of illegally using two technologies. The first patent involved is related to single-chip white light illumination. Single-chip LEDs are widely used in backlight displays for mobile phones and automotive instrument panels. They are characterized by the ability to convert blue light emitted by InGaN LEDs into white light through phosphorous.
The second patent is a detailed description of the electrical connection of high power LEDs in typical automotive lighting applications.
Dominant then filed a counterclaim claiming that OSRAM was unfairly competing. The Malaysian company sued the German company for making fraudulent or misleading statements about Dominant products to its customers and end customers.
The lawsuit is still awaiting judgment, but several Dominant customers have suspended their partnership.
Last October, the US micro-semiconductor company succumbed to the pressure of Osram, claiming that it would no longer distribute Dominant's LED products. As ITC made a relevant clarification statement, Dominant said its products will compete with OSRAM in the global LED market. 
After clarifying the issue of patent infringement of OSRAM, LED manufacturers are very confident about the impact on the global LED market. Dominant Semiconductor, a Malaysian LED manufacturer accused of infringement by Osram, said that the US ITC (International Trade Commission) has clarified that the company has not done anything wrong.
