German automaker Volkswagen recently launched its latest generation of Touareg for the first time in China. The new model is equipped with LED matrix headlights jointly developed by German Volkswagen component manufacturer Hella and Volkswagen. Volkswagen plans to offer a new lighting system for the new luxury SUV in the name of "IQ.LIGHT - LED Matrix Headlights".

The adaptive matrix headlights will be controlled with targets of up to 128 LEDs to provide accurate and optimal light distribution and luminous intensity. Hella believes that LED matrix headlights will improve safety and comfort compared to traditional lighting systems because they allow drivers to identify road details and possible obstacles in the morning, giving them more time to do response.

HELLA produces LED matrix headlights for the new Volkswagen Touareg

Individually controlled LEDs are mixed into a bright area matrix in the high beam and low beam modules. The low beam uses 48 LED matrices on a shared circuit board. The high beam board uses 27 LEDs. These 75 LEDs are combined to form an adaptive matrix lamp.

Each LED matrix headlight has 128 independently controlled LEDs

53 additional LEDs ensure display of lighting functions, including lighting in front of the vehicle, as well as daytime running lights, turn signals, position indicators and direction indicators. The new Touareg headlamps will use a total of 256 LEDs.

The front digital camera will analyze road conditions, upcoming vehicles and more. And the data combined with GPS data and speed and steering angle will enter the LEDs in the selection matrix to provide ideal headlight illumination for the road, with the surrounding area being in front in less than a second.

In the Touareg, the LED Matrix Headlight System uses “dynamic light assist” to automatically perform LED selection and illumination within the headlamp matrix to independently turn the LEDs on and off and adjust the light to the current environment, terrain and traffic conditions.

By summarizing many different data, the car can identify the driving position, such as on a city or country road, on a highway or off-road vehicle, and predict where other road users may currently be located. The very precise illumination of the individual LEDs inside the LED Matrix Headlamps ensures that the lights do not glare. Therefore, the system will provide the driver with the best possible illumination without disturbing other road users.

Camera-based systems respond to signs by temporarily dimming the LEDs to avoid glare for the Touareg driver itself. The camera can even recognize reflections caused by roads of rainy roads and reduce them to avoid glare. Hella pointed out that the additional lighting adjustability of LED matrix headlights is clear to the driver.
